Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the scene and another man who escaped after the incident was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area showed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an court order due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the minister said.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents informed Italian media, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
