Chelsea's Manager Enzo Maresca Describes Lead-Up Period as His 'Worst 48 Hours' with the Blues

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton was "the worst 48 hours" since his arrival with the London club.

The 44-year-old delivered a somewhat cryptic message in his post-match interview even after securing a 2-0 win at home thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those three precious points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps lightening the mood after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's winless run to consecutive matches.

Yet, when questioned about the full-back's assist and general display, Maresca surprisingly shared his frustration over the previous 48-hour period at the organization.

"The way the players are eager to improve has been excellent and this is the reason why I praise them - because with a host of challenges, they are excelling after a difficult week," he commented.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because several people didn't support us."

Pressed on the specifics, the ex- Leicester City boss added: "Worst 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "In general. In general," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are very happy with the fans."

Injury and Suspension Crisis

Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent injury and suspension problems, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our best player but we play almost all season without our best player.

"We play five games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so delighted for the players and it's something that I would want people outside to recognize because the commitment from the players is remarkable."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton consolidated their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come next week.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was ambiguous who or what prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his spell as Chelsea manager.

In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at the training ground, faced a pre-game news conference where he appeared relaxed, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton side.

It was unclear whether any specific media reports had unsettled him, if social media comments played a role, or if it was something deeper from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter related to the club's fans, a section of which have not yet fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester in July last year.
