Italy's Consumer Group Criticizes Lift Ticket Price Hikes as Completely Unjustified

A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they call entirely unreasonable price increases for ski passes this cold-weather period, cautioning that skiing could become a luxury reserved for the wealthy.

Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country

Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to fresh research.

The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is projected to hit €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.

Annual Ticket Prices and Additional Expenses

At the same time, seasonal ski passes will vary between €755 per adult in Roccaraso to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.

The expense of hiring ski equipment has similarly risen, along with lodging costs and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Watchdog Leader Points to Unreasonable Hikes

The consumer association president, leading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the cost rises—which operators blame on higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.

"Particularly since inflation in Italy are under control and utility costs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have returned to normal," he explained.

The president further stated that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.

Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective

Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.

Even with these hikes, Italy remains a more affordable destination for winter sports fans in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austria.

International Event Background

The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the country prepares to host the 2026 Winter Games between February 6 and 22. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the global competition.

"Through the Winter Games we must similarly convey a message of peace and conversation... to stop warfare during the Olympics," he declared.
