Keith Baker along with Monte Cook Will Lead Classes at DMU

Beginning in 2018, a specialized event organizer has been organizing deeply engaging experiences where professional dungeon masters manage fantasy roleplaying games in historic castles in the UK and at Landoll’s Mohican Castle. These all-inclusive trips are especially popular among forever DMs who infrequently find the chance to actually play themselves, and they often ask for tips from seasoned professionals on topics ranging from improvisation and puzzle design to dealing with tough scenarios at the table.

In response, the organizers began developing a systematic approach to answer these inquiries, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The first session is scheduled for early January 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“There are countless online tutorials on almost every theme and gain significant knowledge, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to an in-person experience alongside peers in game mastering, where there’s live engagement with faculty instructors and your peers likely in a similar position and seek to enhance their abilities,” explained the program's dean.

Workshop Options and Cost Levels

Dungeon Masters can opt for packages ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to two thousand five hundred dollars, depending on the degree of interaction they desire with the professionals. The base tier includes selection from four classes:

  • Core Techniques: Covers the fundamentals of leading a game.
  • Long-Term Game Planning: Centers on building persistent adventures.
  • Setting Creation: Highlights the art of setting design.
  • Career Building: Aimed at game masters who seek to understand more about the tabletop profession.

Every class includes eight hours of instruction divided across two days.

“The courses are designed so that you depart having usable skills, increased self-assurance, and a lot of usable tools,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they go beyond recorded content. These are sessions that you can participate in, absorb insights from, and then return to your group the week after and put into practice in your regular session.”

Professional Teachers

The majority of workshops are taught by two professors. Universe creation is led by Monte Cook and a renowned campaign designer, jointly leading the skill of universe design.

Career building includes four different teachers, such as Elisa Teague, a podcast co-host, and an early professional game master. The additional faculty is designed to provide specialized information to participants with particular aims.

“Various attendees plan to create their own live gameplay show and present their narratives with the world, others plan to produce and write original content,” Carl explained. “Others simply wish to ask, How do I get to be a DM at something like D&D in a Castle? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?

Higher Tiers

A $1.5K gold tier includes access to a opening gathering, a starter kit, and a 30-minute office hour appointment with an instructor. This represents the first Dungeon Master Academy, though the team has previously run similar events during breaks between campaigns at their castle events.

“One could practically host an full two days just on consultation sessions for professional dungeon masters,” Carl said. “It's unclear if that’s the most effective utilization of each attendee's hours – I believe the coursework and the practical exercises is too valuable – but I suspect it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The twenty-five hundred dollar platinum tier offers an 60-minute private session and the chance to manage an adventure for five players plus a teacher, who will then offer feedback and guidance.

“The aim is for the teacher to evaluate any element is concerned with: Hey I don’t do well with spontaneous decisions or I encounter obstacles in certain battle scenarios. May I present a situation for you and receive input on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl explained. “Or maybe they want to get feedback and information on a definite universe that they’ve been creating.”

Coming Developments

Responses from the first event will help shape subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include expanding one-on-one sessions, making it longer to three days, or trying out alternative workshop formats.

“I anticipate that we do this very often,” Carl expressed. “I truly hope to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a given year, in various locations, and in various nations. The reception has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're extremely satisfied with current developments and I think it would be fantastic to be able to organize these in conjunction with big conventions.”
