🔗 Share this article ‘Like a Champions League win’ - Kendall’s memorable night for England It took Lucia Kendall only six minutes to score in her second starting appearance for England. “She reacted like a Champions League winner,” noted England coach Sarina Wiegman with a smile. To Lucia Kendall, the moment was just as monumental. The England boss was commenting on the instant the Villa player ran off in jubilation following her debut international strike – during the opening stages of a 2-0 victory over Ghana at St Mary's Stadium. “I think the pitch needs some attention after that!” she quipped, referring to Kendall’s perfect knee slide. Getting up from her slide, Kendall took in the moment with cheeks puffed and a radiant grin. A Fairytale Homecoming Having been “an integral part” of Southampton for a decade, where she progressed from the youth ranks to play over a century of games, her summer switch to Villa was a significant change. Therefore, scoring at St Mary's upon her return and during just her third international match felt dreamlike. “To do it here, where I was raised, was an immensely special moment. This place made me into the player I am,” Kendall remarked. “It felt like it was written [in the stars]. It was so special. I got overwhelmed with emotion really.” A Rapid Rise to Prominence It may have been Southampton who “developed” Kendall, but a crucial decision at the age of 15 proved pivotal to her future. The talented youngster was also a keen cricketer – her dad Will played for Hampshire – but ultimately had to choose between the sports just as she was earning a place in Southampton's first-team squad. She opted for football. “It presented a dilemma. Juggling both became impossible,” Kendall explained in a previous media conference. “Growing up, I had a passion for cricket. The decision was genuinely tough. I went back and forth, but when the time came, I understood I enjoy football a bit more.” Growing up admiring Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s goal-getting midfield exploits, Kendall is starting her own path with comparable attacking instincts. Her ability to manage first-team football alongside a psychology degree indicated the mental fortitude and commitment required for the top level. The club fought to keep her, but with her deal up, Villa moved decisively to introduce her to the top flight. Her meteoric rise has seen her become a WSL regular and an England international in a short space of time. “Maintaining her level immediately in a new league and club is difficult, yet she has done so,” noted Wiegman. “Things have gone so quickly so fast, but she just keeps up her levels and shows she is a good player - and that is impressive.” Her performance was notable; she struck the woodwork and nearly crafted another chance, preceding Russo’s spot-kick. Her substitution on the hour mark was met with a loud reception from fans and an announcer proudly declaring her local roots. Kendall scored 29 goals for the club in more than a decade of service and added: “Being at Southampton for so long, I played regular senior football from the age of 16 and that was incredibly beneficial. “Their unwavering belief in my abilities made me feel prepared for the challenge ahead. “I understood the need to justify my selection at international level, where the tempo is higher, akin to moving up a league.” Praise for a Complete Midfielder Prior to her 2025 transfer, Kendall featured in 103 games for Southampton. Kendall has made an instant impression at international level, with observers stating she has just “got it” as a midfielder and looks like a “natural”. The England manager aims to manage her exposure, citing the roles of both media and club, but is reassured by the player’s humble nature. Days after being called up by the Lionesses for the first time, Kendall was sitting in front of the media saying she was keen to impress, but also understood the need for the team's greater good and whatever role she needed to play in that. Arsenal striker Alessia Russo said it felt like Kendall had “been here for years” as she integrated seamlessly into the squad. “{This team's just gone on to win back-to
