A young person from Australia has appeared in court after allegedly vandalizing a large blue sculpture of a mythical creature by applying plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared via phone at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with one count of property damage.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the municipal authorities said that surveillance video captured a individual putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

The accused made no plea and told the court she was ill, as reported by news outlets, with the judge recommending her to secure a lawyer before her next court date in December.

The following day the reported event, the city leader said that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the stickers could not be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This intentional vandalism to a cherished public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in mid-September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the council would pursue the “substantial” repair costs from those accountable for the vandalism.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its price tag and design.

Priced at 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture depicts a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers influenced by an ancient marsupial ant-eater discovered in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
